Meeting new people while travel nursing can be a daunting task – moving to a new city for either a short amount of time or a permanent move. This can be difficult for someone in any situation but especially true for a travel nurse who changes locations often every 13 weeks. You will certainly have your colleagues at the hospital and other travel nurses, but with overlapping shifts and days off it can be difficult to find a time that works for everyone to get together.
So how do you go about finding people with similar interests, values, and views in your new community? How do you get to know people in a comfortable setting where the conversation flows easily and if it doesn’t, there are plenty of other people there to chat with? Meetup is a great website to locate others in your area with the same interests as you.
One of our travelers recently told us about Meetup and all of the fun people that she has met while traveling. A network like this is such a great tool for other travelers to use to meet people during their travel assignments.
According to Meetup.com, “Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. More than 2,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities”. There are 9.5 million members around the world in over 45,000 cities representing over 90,000 meeting topics. You are almost guaranteed to find a group meeting in your travel city and with over 8,000 topics, chances are you will find a group you will be interested in too.
There are Meetup groups around every theme, interest, hobby, political affiliation, or religious view that you can possibly imagine. Are you a Twilight fan?…yep, there’s a Meetup group for that. Do you own a Pug dog?…yep, there’s a Meetup group for that! Do you love playing board games?…yep, there’s a Meetup group for that too! Or maybe you are looking for a group that enjoys chocolate, wine, hiking, biking, or motorcycles… there are Meetup groups for that too!
No matter what you are looking for, chances are are good you will find groups of people with similar interests. And who knows, after a few meetings, you may have a new friend to go out and explore the city with! So what are you waiting for? Go online, find a group, and go Meetup!
